Why did we sponsor Eunice?
Eunice is the fifth child in a family of seven children. Their mother was solely responsible for raising her children and, due to escalating domestic violence, moved back in with her own mother several years ago. In 2020, the mother passed away, and since then the three youngest children, including Eunice, have been living with their grandmother. The grandmother was unable to adequately provide for the three children. In addition, Eunice and her youngest sister were at risk of being forced into marriage by their father. The situation was so distressing that during a home visit by Kids to School, members of the Local Assistance Committee (LAC), Emily Muriet and Sr. Celia, considered it essential to place the two girls in a different school far away from their grandmother’s home, out of reach of their father.
As a result, Eunice began receiving sponsorship from Kids to School in April 2022, while her younger sister was accommodated at the primary school run by Sr. Celia in Loitoktok. At that time, Eunice was in her third year of secondary school. In 2023, Eunice gave birth to a son. Unfortunately, she was unable to complete her secondary education thereafter.
The support Eunice received from Kids to School enabled her to remain in secondary school and protected her from being forced into an arranged marriage by her father against her will. Unfortunately, after the birth of her son, Eunice decided not to return to school. Nevertheless, every additional year of education increases a woman’s chances of achieving independence and building a better future for herself and her family.
