Why did we sponsor Maen?
Maen is the second child in a family of six children. The family lives in Kajiado County. Her mother has never received any formal education and is the sole breadwinner of the family. Her father does not contribute to the family’s livelihood. During her primary school years, Maen lived with her grandparents because her mother was unable to provide for all of her children. After successfully completing primary school with good results, Maen moved back to live with her mother, as her grandmother could not afford the cost of secondary education.
Maen’s mother recognizes the importance of her children receiving a higher level of education. In 2019, she took out a loan so that Maen could start secondary school. However, the funds were quickly exhausted, and Maen was forced to miss the final part of the school year. Kids to School wanted to give her the opportunity to complete her secondary education and improve her future prospects. Sponsorship began in January 2020. At the end of 2022, Maen successfully completed her secondary school education.
After completing secondary school, Maen was not admitted to the course of study she had hoped to pursue. In Kenya, students are allocated to universities and vocational training institutions based on their examination results, personal preferences, and the number of places available in each program. This disappointment led her to decide not to enroll in the alternative program to which she had been admitted. Instead, she chose not to continue her studies at that time.
Maen is now married and has one child.
