Rose dreamed about becoming a journalist because she wants to motivate young women to educate themselves so they can build an independent future for themselves.

Why did we sponsor Rose?
Rose was able to complete both primary and secondary school despite numerous setbacks and the extremely difficult circumstances in which she lived. Kids to School chose to sponsor her because she had demonstrated exceptional motivation and determination, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a remarkable determination to keep looking for opportunities. We recognized her potential and believed she deserved the chance to pursue further education, increasing her ability to build an independent future for herself.
Rose became an orphan at the age of five. Life with her stepmother, her father’s second wife, was unbearable. She ran away from home and ended up in Nairobi, where she lived on the streets for a year. Eventually, she found work as a house keeperr and was fortunate that, after five years of hard work, her employer gave her the opportunity to return to school in 2013. That same year, she completed her primary education and achieved results that qualified her for a good secondary school in Nyeri. Unfortunately, after only a few months in 2014, she had to leave school when her former employer suddenly lost the financial means to support her education. Rose returned to Nairobi, found work as a house keeper, and continued her secondary education while working. In her final year, she found another sponsor, and in 2017 she successfully completed her secondary school examinations. Rose was passionate about soccer and served as captain of her school soccer team. Through soccer, she came into contact with Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP). After finishing secondary school, she volunteered there as a life skills coach, mentoring and supporting other young people. Through VAP, Rose was introduced to Kids to School.
With the support of Kids to School, Rose was given the change to fullfill her dream of studying journalism in 2018. Unfortunately, her secondary school examination results were not high enough to qualify for that program. With assistance from VAP, she first completed a one-year Certificate in Interior Design in 2018. This qualification enabled her to enroll in a Diploma in Interior Design program in January 2019, which was sponsored by Kids to School. Rose graduated in December 2021, one year delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rose currently works as coach at VAP. She supports young people in their personal development, helping them build self-confidence and plan for their future. She combines her passion for serving the community with her love of soccer by working as a soccer coach and an international referee. She supports her family whenever possible. Thanks to her income, she has been able to help her two stepsisters start their own businesses.
Since completing her studies, Rose has continued to develop her skills through various training programs, including First Aid, coaching, counseling, and a referee training course. Through these qualifications and her professional experience, she continues to make a positive impact on the lives of young people in her community.

Mijn naam is Rose uit South Kinagop. Ik stopte met naar school gaan toen ik 8 jaar was en in de derde klas zat. Mijn stiefmoeder zocht werk voor mij als hulp in de huishouding zodat mijn stiefzusjes onderwijs konden volgen. Ik werkte zes maanden en mijn stiefmoeder nam al het geld dat ik verdiende. Ik was moe en besloot weg te lopen op zoek naar een baan om mezelf te onderhouden. Ik kon het busgeld niet betalen, dus stapte ik in een vrachtwagen die kool vervoerde en die me op het busstation van Machakos in de stad Nairobi bracht. Ik ben bijna een jaar een straatmeisje geweest. In 2007 sprak ik met een van mijn klanten voor wie ik goederen naar de markt bracht. Later nam ze mij in dienst als huishoudster en ik heb vijf jaar bij haar gewoond zonder terug te keren naar mijn familie. Ze waardeerde mijn harde werken en in 2013 stuurde ze me terug naar school. Sinds klas drie was ik niet meer naar school geweest maar ik ging nu rechtstreeks naar klas acht. Datzelfde jaar zat ik voor de eindtoets van de lagere school, het Keniaanse Certificaat van Primair Onderwijs. Ik heb goed mijn best gedaan en daardoor een eindcijfer dat hoog genoeg was om naar de middelbare school in Nyeri te gaan. Helaas toen ik in de eerste klas zat, ging het onverwachts fout, de mevrouw die me in 2013 de kans gaf weer naar school te gaan kon mijn schoolgeld niet betalen omdat ze haar baan verloor. Ze vroeg me beleefd om terug te gaan naar mijn familie, maar de vernedering die ik door mijn stiefmoeder had ervaren, was ik vastbesloten voor een mooie toekomst en niet terug te gaan naar mijn familie. In 2015 ging ik terug naar BuruBuru, Nairobi, en zocht een baan als hulp in de huishouding. Ik vond er een, waar ik zeven maanden gewerkt hebt en door Gods genade al het geld spaarde. Ik kon terug naar school, Golden Bridge Secondary School. Om mijn schoolgeld te kunnen betaling heb ik altijd gewerkt. In 2017 toen ik in de vierde en laatste klas zat ben ik gesponsord door Calvary Temple. Mijn hele middelbare school heb ik gewoond bij een vriend. Na mijn eindexamen kwam ik bij VIJANA AMANI PAMOJA om vrijwilligerswerk te doen als coach voor levensvaardigheden. Dankzij de hulp van mijn mentoren (Ann Nduku, Nancy Waweru en Caroline Kisato) kreeg ik in 2018 een beurs van Kids to School om journalistiek te studeren. Ik kon die toen niet accepteren omdat ik de middelbare school met te slechte cijfers afgesloten had om deze studie te volgen. Ik heb toen uiteindelijk gekozen voor een andere opleiding, die voor één jaar gesponsord kon worden door VAP. Deze cursus heb ik met succes afgerond en dat gaf me de kans alsnog mijn beurs van Kids to school te gebruiken. In januari 2019 kreeg ik een volledige beurs bij Stichting Kids to School om een diploma in interieurdesign en mode te behalen. Ik hoop eind april 2020 af te studeren.
