Why do we sponsor Stephen?
Stephen is the eldest child in a family of nine children. His mother has been a widow since 2015. She sells tea at the local market to earn money for food and to cover the primary school expenses of the younger children. The income she receives from renting out her piece of land to farmers is used to pay the school fees of the children attending secondary school. His older sisters married partly so that more financial resources would be available for the education of their younger brothers. Over time, increasing support from family members and the wider community became necessary. Stephen himself was able to continue his education thanks to assistance from foreign benefactors. As the eldest son, he feels a strong responsibility, in line with the traditions of his community, to provide financial support for his family following his father’s death. He completed secondary school in 2023 with good results, achieving a B- grade. While waiting for university placement, he took on casual jobs and managed to earn enough money to buy two sheep for his mother.
Stephen was admitted to university to pursue a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance, and his mother was able to secure support from a benefactor to cover only his first semester. During that semester, he met someone from COTRR, who encouraged him to apply for sponsorship from Kids to School.
Since January 2025, Kids to School has been supporting Stephen, enabling him to continue his studies without financial worries and significantly improving his chances of building a better future for himself and his family.
Stephen expects to finish his degree at the end of 2027. The unwavering resilience of his mother inspires him to work hard and excel academically, even when faced with numerous challenges. Despite her hardships, his mother remained determined to provide her children with a better future. She
emphasizes the importance of education as a pathway to escape their poverty. Stephen believes that education is not just a privilege but a powerful tool for change for a better future.
