Why do we sponsor Victor?

When Victor was not at school, he works alongside his mother as a waste picker at a landfill site. His father abandoned the family, and Victor has always felt a strong sense of responsibility for caring for his mother and his four younger siblings and helping to increase the family’s income.

Thanks to sponsorship support and the help of his headteacher, Victor was able to complete primary school. During his secondary education, however, he was often forced to stay at home because there was not enough money to pay his school fees. To keep up with his studies, he borrowed textbooks from friends and continued learning on his own. His mother applied for bursaries and borrowed money whenever she could, but it was never enough. Once again, dedicated educators believed in him. A teacher and the school principal supported him and made sure he was able to complete secondary school. Victor even chose to repeat his final year in order to achieve higher grades. His hard work paid off, and he graduated with an excellent result, a B grade.

His strong academic performance earned him admission to university. His mother borrowed money to pay for his first semester. While studying, Victor worked incredibly hard, balancing his university courses with his work at the landfill. When there was no money available for the second semester, he continued attending classes unofficially, gaining access to the university building through the help of a friendly security guard. However, because his tuition fees had not been paid, he was unable to sit his end-of-year examinations.

At that critical moment, Victor and his mother met Andrew, a member of the Kids to School Local Advisory Committee. Andrew was deeply impressed by Victor’s determination, perseverance, and excellent academic results despite the difficult circumstances in which he was living. He decided to help Victor and recommended him for financial support. Since September 2024, Victor has been sponsored by Kids to School.

Victor feels priviliged to now have a sponsor, allowing him to continue his university education without the constant fear of not being able to pay tuition fees for the next semester. He is working hard and is determined to make the most of this opportunity. He expects to complete his studies in 2027.
